When to dive each region
Conditions vary along the island. The dry season (about April–October) is the broad window, but each region has its own rhythm. Full detail on the diving season page.
Komodo
Diveable year-round; water ~27–29°C. Manta encounters most reliable in the transition/wet months; currents always a factor.
Maumere
Best roughly May–September. Calmer macro and wall diving; visibility good in the dry season.
Alor
Best roughly April–October. Strong currents reward experienced divers; water ~26–29°C.
Riung
Calm much of the year and easiest in the dry season — the gentlest option for families and new divers.

Flores Diving — FAQ
Where can you dive in Flores?
Flores has four main dive regions, each different in character. Komodo National Park off western Flores is known for mantas and strong drift currents; the Maumere Sea Gardens in the east are calmer, with macro life and walls; Alor, further east again, has steep walls and very strong currents for experienced divers; and the Riung 17 Islands Marine Park in the centre-north offers calm, snorkel-friendly reefs. See the full Flores dive sites list for each.
Do I need to be an advanced diver to dive Flores?
It depends on the region. Riung and parts of Maumere are comfortable for Open Water divers and even snorkellers. Komodo's signature sites (Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock) and most of Alor involve strong, sometimes unpredictable currents and are honestly suited to Advanced Open Water divers with drift experience. We match sites to your certification and recent dive count rather than putting everyone on the same boat. You can also take a PADI course in Flores to build up.
When is the best time to dive Flores?
The dry season, roughly April to October, is the general window across most of Flores, with warm water (about 26–29°C) and good visibility. Manta sightings in Komodo are most reliable in the wet/transition months. East Flores and Alor have slightly different patterns, so timing depends on which region you choose — see our diving season by region page.
Can I combine several Flores regions in one trip?
Yes. A Flores dive safari links regions overland and by boat, while a liveaboard can cross the arc by sea. Because the regions are spread along a long island, we plan realistic travel times rather than promising you everything in a few days. Tell us your dates and we will build a route that actually works.
